This is a fabulous website, Invention At Play by the Smithsonsian, allows kids to experiment with using different tools to achieve a goal, like getting a ball into a cup. In the process, they’ll be learning all about physics – gravity, accelleration, simple machines etc, all while having fun!

Every time I do this with a class I am astounded by what they can create! The Big Build challenge asks students to work in teams to first roll up newspaper and tape it to make “logs”, then tape the logs together to form structures. I have seen teams build cubby houses, domes, pyramids, all of which they could stand or sit inside, and even bridges able to hold their weight! Give it a try and be amazed yourself.
